Chapter Five

Phoebe

I managed to find a quiet corner of the lobby to do some light reading. The newest edition of Vogue was spread out across my table as I drank my coffee.

Chairs clattered and I looked up to see what all the noise was about, only to see Reb stumbling over toward me.

Shit.

I frowned at him. “You broke my balcony door.”

I almost laughed at the deadpan look he gave me.

“You locked me out on a fourteenth-story balcony in my underwear and then you stole my designs.”

I glared at him. “I took back the designs that you stole from me.”

“I didn’t steal shit.”

I rolled my eyes. “That was my contact. You stole my contact, then you stole my designs. Sorry, I forgot that first part.”

“I was doing my job! We’re spies. We trick people, and we steal. It’s literally in our job descriptions.”

“And that’s exactly what I did to you. I tricked you and I stole from you.”

He dropped his head forward and a strained laugh escaped him. “Do you want money? I’ll pay you for the designs, Phoebe.”

“I’m not interested in your money.”

“Then what do you want? This is about money. It’s a job. It’s a job where we make a shitload of money by being deceptive. You’re really going to sit there and tell me you just wanted to get back at me?”

“No.”

“Then what do you want?”

He was clearly exasperated, but so was I.

“I want to talk.”

He stared at me, blinking in obvious confusion. “You want to talk?”

For a smart, successful spy, Reb could be so stupid.

“Yes.”

“You’ve spent the last five years avoiding talking to me like the plague, and now you want to talk?”

“Yes. What part of that is confusing?”

He let out a heavy sigh and slumped into the chair across from me. “What on earth do you want to talk about?”

I reached into my purse and pulled out the small envelope that I’d found with the designs.

When he saw it, his eyes widened. “Did you read it?”

“I did.”

“You weren’t supposed to get that yet.”

“When was I supposed to get it, then?”

“When all of this was over.”

I looked at him and put my finger on the envelope. “I want to talk about this letter, but I don’t want to talk about it here.”

He hesitated. I could tell there was a clock ticking in the back of his mind.

“Where do you want to talk?”

I stood up and took the envelope and my coffee, walking toward the elevator.

Reb followed me.

He always followed.

When we made it back up to my room, I stretched out against the pillows. Reb looked at me, frowning, and moved to perch at the foot of the bed.

We sat in silence for a while, and I took a deep breath. “You wrote that you cared about me. You left me a check for what I paid for those designs and you told me you cared about me.”

“It’s true.”

“It’s bullshit!” My eyes burned with unshed tears, but I didn’t want to cry in front of him.

“I just don’t get what you want, Phoebe.
